Note by Frank Kolwicz:

James, I have found what I think is a defect in the Vuescan version that caused a lot of artifacts in my scans and color rendition problems, including the one I submitted. The oversharpening is my fault, it's been a problem for me for a long time, only recently remedied by using TLR sharpening tools instead of my own (poor) judgement.

I went back to the RAW scan of the slide and redid it with a current version of Vuescan and got much better color rendition, but still had the serious problem with some kind of fringeing (color in places, but B&W, too) that causes some parts of an image to be doubled and shifted a few pixels. I can send you a sample of the problem, if you like.

A scan under similar conditions, with a different slide, done with the Minolta Dimage software does not show this fringeing problem, but that software has other problems (clipping) that make it undesirable. Other slides I've scanned with Vuescan may or may not show this problem, it may be related to the film/scanner combo.
